Reiki and Animals

Why is Reiki ideal for healing animals?

It is gentle, painless, non-invasive and stress-free for animals.  Reiki heals at all levels of an animal’s being: physical, mental, emotional and spiritual.  It goes to those issues most in need of healing, even those unknown to the practitioner.  Reiki is always safe and comfortable for both the animal and healer.  It can be given at a distance and adapted to any problem that affectxs animals, so it can be used under any circumstances.

With Reiki, animals do not have to be confined or restrained to be treated.  The Reiki practitioner works with the animal to determine how the treatment will be given.   The animal retains a large degree of control over his own process of healing, including how much Reiki he will take and under what circumstances, so that he becomes an active and willing partner in the healing process.

How can Reiki be used for healing your animal friend?

Reiki has been known to offer our animal friends many benefits. Reiki induces deep relaxation and stress-reduction and, over time, can reduce the tendency toward nervousness.   It can accelerate healing after surgery or illness.   Reiki  is a powerful tool for emotional healing following trauma, abuse, neglect, fear and trust issues; therefore, it is ideal for an animal that has been rescued and needs help adjusting to its new environment.   For a dying animal and his people, Reiki provides compassionate support that can make the transition more peaceful for all concerned.  With healthy animals, it can maintain health on all levels for your pet.

If you are a practitioner it can deepen your bond and the trust between you and your animal friend.

Where does a treatment take place?

Generally, the practitioner travels to the animal’s environment to perform treatment so that the animal is comfortable.  A familiar environment allows the animal to be much more relaxed and open to receiving Reiki.  It is important to provide a treatment space that will be undisturbed and ample movement opportunities for the animal.

How long does a treatment last?

The length of a treatment session varies by situation and client.  The treatment itself will last anywhere from 30 minutes to an hour; however, the practitioner allows a little extra time to discuss their impression of the animal with the animal’s human.  While connecting with an animal during a treatment, the practitioner develops a rapport and non-verbal communication enabling the practitioner to identify when it is time to stop.

How do animals react to this new sensation of Reiki?

When receiving a Reiki treatment, people and animals commonly enter a state of deep relaxation and peace.  Animals are much more sensitive than humans to energy in general and feel Reiki energy immediately and strongly.  Many animals will startle and stop in their tracks when they first feel the energy while others may move away.

How animals react to this new sensation really depends on their temperament and previous experience with humans. They may recognize the healing potential and immediately get in a relaxed position to accept the energy or they move away unsettled for a period of time.  This will determine if the practitioner’s treatment of your animal friend will be performed hands on or from a distance. If the treatment is from a distance, the animal should be in a small room where they can roam freely, but will still have the ability to receive the energy.

What is a Healing Reaction?

A Healing Reaction is when the physical body temporarily produces new symptoms or intensifies the old ones as it clears away infection or other injurious influences, during or after a treatment.  This is a visible sign that healing is occurring.  While animals are less prone to healing reactions it is possible for them to occur.  If a healing reaction should occur, please remember that the symptoms will be intensified, but temporary. Continued Reiki treatments will help the response to pass quickly.  For example:  if an animal is suffering from respiratory symptoms, these intensify during or directly after causing the animal to sound more congested.

How do you know if the Reiki worked?

The results of a Reiki treatment are generally felt during the treatment, directly after or over the following several days.  Because Reiki energy goes where it is needed, the effects may be subtle and go beyond what one can visibly see and impact a situation positively.  This type of healing could be seen for example in a shelter where an animal will be adopted if that is what the animal most needs.  Or the effects could be clearly evidenced in the significant physical improvement or releasing of an emotional pattern of a condition.

The flow of Reiki energy can be dehydrating so animals should have access to fresh water and may consume an increased amount following a treatment.   Likewise an increased elimination may be experienced as well for a period after treatment.
